NAFED honored two individuals at the annual meeting in Indianapolis.

Rod Brenton of Don Brenton’s Fire Protection in Nova Scotia received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Don Brenton’s Fire Protection is a third generation family business. Rod's father, Don Brenton Sr., started the business in 1950, and in 1964, at only 17 years old, Rod transitioned from working part time to full time in the business. Over the years the business has expanded to include all facets of industry. Rod joined NAFED and NFPA in 1974. He has served several terms as a regional director on NAFED’s board. He was instrumental in developing the curriculum for the fire protection courses offered at the Nautical Institute of Canada. In addition, Rod has also served on several provincial and local committees educating AHJs. Rod was instrumental in securing partnerships with international service companies, expanding the company’s footprint internationally with the maritime industries. Don Brenton’s Fire Protection has grown organically under Rod’s leadership from a small, two-person operation to now a business with over thirty-four full-time employees with contracts in both the defense and offshore markets. The business is now being operated by two of his children and two nephews.

Andy Halasz, vice president of sales at Amerex Corporation, received a special recognition award. A leader in the fire protection industry for decades, Andy started in fire protection in 1973 at Williams & Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. From there he went to work for Kidde-Fenwal for fifteen years, being promoted from a district manager to regional sales manager and finally national sales manager. Andy started his work for Amerex in October 1994, first as a vice president of regional sales then becoming vice president of sales, taking over for Ned Paine upon Ned’s retirement. In his role of vice president of sales he has been instrumental in the growth and success of Amerex and will be retiring himself at the end of June 2016. He has been known as an advocate for better fire protection and has supported various organizations such as NAFED, FEMA, and state associations.
