Pre-Conference Wednesday
  1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. DOT Train-the-Trainer Seminar
Per DOT regulations, HazMat employees must have knowledge of hazardous materials (HM), the Hazardous Material Regulations (HMR), and be able to perform assigned HazMat functions properly. They must be trained using a systematic approach that includes testing, documentation, and certification. Training-related violations are the top violations found by the DOT during their inspections. NAFED's half-day DOT Train-the-Trainer Seminar will train an individual from your company to become the trainer for other HazMat employees.

8:30 - 10:00 a.m. Keynote Address: Finding the Right People for the Right Job at the Right Time
with Mike Hourigan
Everybody is right for a job; unfortunately they may not be right for YOUR job. Join author and change-management expert, Mike Hourigan, as he shows you how to understand the Millennial mindset and how to get them to want to work for YOU. Each generation brings their own set of values and a unique work ethic to the workplace. The ability to translate expectations and values into a common language is what will make organizations thrive and aid retention to keep the best talent for your organization. Mike will teach audience members where to look for the best candidates and how to interview and ask the vital questions to see if they are the right fit. You will also learn tips on writing a job description that will appeal to Gen Y and how to check references and get the information you need to make the right decision. Using his own experience, Mike will share some of the secrets he used to hire a national sales force for Olympus Corporation and how he designed the unique hiring and interviewing system used by Harley-Davidson in the U.S. and Canada. A. Joint Commission Update–New Business Opportunity
In this session we’ll take a look at the adoption of the 2012 editions of NFPA 101 and NFPA 99 at medical facilities. We’ll learn the language of the Joint Commission so we can talk the talk when approaching the health care facilities you deal with. We’ll show you how to meet what is needed with your paperwork. We’ll cover current hot topics including generator monitoring, 20-40 spacing, 10-hour rule for sprinklers, 4-hour rule for fire alarms, and the SAFER matrix, along with examples of some of the changes.

B.Non-Standard Appliances for Commercial Cooking Operations
This presentation is designed to raise awareness regarding unique cooking appliances used in commercial cooking applications where fire suppression systems are required. Topics will include: how current codes address these appliances, documentation; service and inspection; when to consider protection of these appliances; resources for proper protection; information that may be requested by a fire system manufacturer to provide guidance on protection schemes; and gaining local approvals.

A. Managing and Maintaining Fleet Vehicles
Whether you have 5 vehicles or 500, managing your fleet can be a complex responsibility impacting profit, safety, and service. Join this session with Cintas Fire Protection’s Corporate Fleet Manager, George Clemons, to learn about conducting driving record checks, pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, preventative maintenance, and using data from GPS tracking software to improve your business.

B. Fire and Fire Extinguishment “Theory of Fire”
The professional service technician who selects, installs, maintains, recharges, and otherwise performs service work on portable fire extinguishers, pre-engineered and engineered fire suppression systems should have a basic knowledge of fire chemistry, theory of extinguishment, classification of fires, and properties of different fuels. This base knowledge will allow the professional technician to better understand the fire hazards that they may encounter, how various fire extinguishing agents, in theory, suppress fire, and therefore have a better understanding of the equipment that they are entrusted to install and maintain.

3:30 - 4:15 p.m. Capitalizing on High-Flow Fire Extinguisher Market Opportunities
This presentation will review the evolution of NFPA 10 from the 2006 revisions to the latest 2013 edition. Attendees will learn the fundamental reasons why the changes have been made and why the latest code changes around high-flow extinguishers have not been widely implemented. We’ll look at the opportunities that are available for placement of additional high-flow extinguishers in lower risk environments and what can be done to educate the end user on the need for these extinguishers. This presentation will provide a roadmap for how to capitalize on this opportunity.

Jeff Terrey from Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications and Craig Voelkert from Amerex (current chairman of the FEMA Government Relations Committee) will present an overview of the FEMA Government Relations Committee’s efforts to protect layered fire protection and access to portable fire extinguishers and extinguishing systems.

NAFED has challenged 40-year veteran of servicing fire equipment, John Gioseffi, to identify ten tools that are a “must have” for every fire equipment technician. Attend this breakout session to see if you have the right tools for the job and to see if John can limit it to just 10!

B. An Introduction to Fire Alarm Inspection, Testing & Maintenance

Expand your business by adding fire alarm inspection, testing and maintenance.  We will review the basic components of a fire alarm system, how each is tested, the tools needed and the things to avoid.
